Dame Pauline Tallen, the Right Honorable Minister of Women’s Affairs. In order to maximize the advantages for as many rural women in Nigeria as possible, OFR, KSG has instructed the Department of Economic Services of Her Ministry to further investigate the more recent proposal of the UN-agricultural Women’s empowerment digital platform tagged, “Rural Women Economic Empowerment Through Digitally Assisted Climate Smart Agriculture.”
It should be remembered that the Ministry, through the same Department, runs a similar platform under the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP), which is funded by the World Bank. NFWP, however, focuses on the economic emancipation of women through cooperative societies in their trade clusters rather than on empowering women in agriculture.
When Dame Tallen welcomed Ms. Beatrice Eyong, the new UN-Women Country Representative for Nigeria and Ecowas, who was on her first official visit to the Minister, she gave the Department of Economic Services the order to go to work. With her proposal on Rural Women Economic Empowerment Through Digitally Assisted Climate Smart Agriculture, the new country representative got right to work.
The Minister for Women’s Affairs, Dame Tallen, indicated that the UN-digital Women’s platform matches with the Ministry’s World Bank-funded initiative on women’s economic empowerment, which she said is extremely important to her. She also noted that the biggest issue facing women is poverty. “If government could focus more on empowering women, it will not only alter the lives of women alone but jump-start the economy,” the minister advises. She urged the government to allocate more funds to initiatives aimed at empowering women.
Ms. Beatrice Eyong, a Cameroonian and the recently appointed UN Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, follows Ms. Comfort Lamptey in that position. She has worked in the field of advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality for more than 35 years.
UN-Women in Nigeria is working on a “new strategy note,” which is the organization’s plan for the following five years, according to the country representative, who arrived with her deputy, Mr. Jansana Wonneh, and a UN consultant, Christine Uwamahoro. She claims that the Ministry’s staff must “put words” into the draft strategic plan about what the nation’s UN-Women program should be for the following five years. She claims that the organization doesn’t want to spend time in the office brainstorming what it believes the needs of vulnerable women, girls, and children in Nigeria should be. This, according to her, led them to include field data in the paper from 6 geopolitical zones comprising 36 States of Nigeria.
Beatric Eyong added that UN-visit Women’s to the Ministry was also intended to inform the Minister that they were in the process of writing a document outlining the requirement that any program the organization implements in Nigeria adhere to both the Ministry’s values and the country’s top priorities.

Beatrice said that the digital platform to promote Assisted Climate Smart Agriculture for rural women has been deployed in Mali, Senegal, and other regions of Africa and has been welcomed and met with many results to the advantage of rural women farmers and even males.
She emphasized that a lot of leadership work had been done on the digital platform at the national and state levels. She said that the purpose of the digital platform is to increase rural communities’ economic and financial capacities by introducing them to the digital economy and helping them better prepare for climate change. Input, suggestions, and criticism are also considered.

The Permanent Secretary, Mr. Shehu Aliyu Shinkafi, made a brief speech to welcome the new UN-Country Women’s Rep and her team. He said that he fully appreciated the UN and other development partners’ cooperation with the Ministry, particularly the roles they were playing in the lives of women and children. Shinkafi prayed for continued growth in the collaboration between the Women Affairs Ministry and UN Agencies.
Other Ministry Directors were present at the courtesy call event, including the Director of Economic Services, Mr. Idris Mohammed, who said in his closing remarks that the Honourable’s directive would not only be expedited but also given further study to enable a successful outcome for the Un-Rural Women’s Women Economic Empowerment Through Digitally Assisted Climate Smart Agriculture.
