WATER SCARCITY WREAKS HAVOC ON UNGWAN BORO COMMUNITY
Gabriel Udeh, Kaduna
Kaduna State, Nigeria – The Ungwan Boro community in Sabon Tasha, Chikun LGA, is grappling with a severe water scarcity crisis that has exacerbated the hardship faced by residents. The community’s public water supply has been non-functional for years, while the epileptic power supply, caused by an ailing transformer, has crippled neighborhood boreholes that provided free water to residents.
The affected areas include U/Boro Segma road, Jaba streets, and several other streets leading to Government Day Secondary School. The situation has deteriorated significantly between December 2024 and March 2025, with groundwater sources, such as wells and streams, drying up.
Residents, including Mama Israel, Mama Kasham, and Mama Nmmayo, lamented the hardship caused by the water scarcity.
“We’ve not seen public water supply in our pumps for years. The boreholes that provided us with free water are now useless due to the constant power outages,” they said.
The community is appealing to Governor Uba Sani’s administration to intervene and provide a reliable water system. “We’re begging the governor to come to our aid. We’re suffering, and our children are suffering. We need water to survive,” the residents pleaded.
The water scarcity crisis has raised concerns about the potential outbreak of waterborne diseases in the community. The state government’s prompt intervention is crucial to mitigate the suffering of the Ungwan Boro community residents.
