A looming crisis is threatening the dry-season sweet potato farms in Kaduna State, as farmers battle against destructive worms and insects that are ravaging their crops.
A recent field visit by journalists to several sweet potato farms along the riverbank revealed the extent of the damage, with farmers expressing serious concerns over the significant losses incurred during this year’s harvest.

According to the farmers, a substantial portion of their sweet potatoes has been damaged by the pests, resulting in reduced yields and financial losses. The affected farmers are now appealing to the state government for urgent assistance to prevent further damage and mitigate the economic impact.
Despite the challenges, sweet potatoes remain a staple crop in Nigeria, particularly among the poor in rural and urban areas. The crop’s affordability and accessibility make it a vital source of nutrition and income for many families.
However, the current infestation poses a significant threat to the food security and livelihoods of these families. The Kaduna State government is urged to take immediate action to address the issue, provide support to affected farmers, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sweet potato farming industry in the state.

The situation highlights the need for proactive measures to protect crops from pests and diseases, as well as the importance of providing farmers with access to resources, expertise, and support to mitigate the impact of such challenges
