A growing trend of influential individuals in Kaduna State disguising their wealth and altering their lifestyles has emerged, as the state grapples with a surge in kidnapping and killings.
According to sources to Public Intel, many affluent residents have begun to conceal their wealth, fearing they may become targets of bandits and kidnappers. This has led to a noticeable decline in the display of luxury items, with many opting to park their high-end vehicles and adopt more modest attire.
Some residents have taken extreme measures, including relocating to new areas, changing their phone numbers, and even engaging in petty trading to blend in with their surroundings. Others have sold their luxury cars or sent them to dealerships for sale.
The fear of being identified as wealthy has also led to a decline in charitable giving, with many previously generous individuals now hesitant to provide assistance to those in need.
A local business mogul, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that he had relocated from his former residence in Nasarawa community to a more secure area, citing the escalating security challenges in the state.
“The kidnapping and killings are getting out of hand,” he said. “I’ve had to move my family to a safer location, and I’m not alone. Many of my friends and colleagues have done same.”
The source pointed to recent incidents, including the kidnapping and killing of a Catholic priest and several women and children in the southern part of the state, as evidence of the deteriorating security situation.
As the security challenges in Kaduna State continue to escalate, it remains to be seen how long this trend of disguising wealth will persist, and what long-term impact it will have on the state’s social and economic fabric.
