According to Anadolu, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated his call for those responsible for the murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh to face justice. Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-spokesperson, General’s explained the request at the UN’s New York headquarters.
The Israeli army claimed earlier this week that one of its soldiers’ “wrong” shots “probably” killed the Al Jazeera journalist. It asserted that no need for a criminal probe existed.
Dujarric stated, “The Secretary-General was told about the announced results in this regard, and he continues to push for accountability for those behind Shireen Abu Akleh’s murder.
We reiterate that journalists must never be the target of violence and must be able to do their jobs without being bothered, threatened, or intimidated.
Abu Akleh was killed on 11 May while covering an Israeli army incursion in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank. She was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health at the time.
She was wearing a helmet and vest that were plainly labeled “Press” when she was killed, according to video footage.
Dujarric responded, “Losing any soul deserves an investigation,” when questioned about the recent Israeli soldier killings of Palestinians in Jenin and Ramallah.
