Police in Ebonyi State on Saturday morning used tear gas to disperse supporters of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The supporters, known as Obi-dients, had congregated for a solidarity march at the Pastoral Centre, Mile 50, in Abakaliki, before security personnel in Hilux vehicles assaulted the area and dispersed them with teargas.
However, only minutes after being forcibly dispersed, Obi supporters regrouped and resumed the solidarity march from Mile 50 to the G-hostel district of the state capital.
Speaking to reporters about the incident, one of the supporters, Steve Ugama, called on the state governor, David Umahi, to address the issue and condemned the attack on the state’s youths, who, according to him, came out only with the Nigerian flag to show their support for a preferred Presidential candidate.
“This is brutal and undemocratic,” he remarked. We met here this morning for a peaceful March when the cops arrived and began tear-gassing us and arrested our comrades.
“The cops broke my phone this morning.” We demand that the persons arrested by the police be freed unconditionally since they have done nothing wrong.
“No one came out with even a stone.” We didn’t show up with a pin. The Nigerian flag is what we brought with us. The emblem of the Labour Party, LP, is what we came up with.
“This movement has taken place in every other section of the nation, including the state where we have a presidential candidate, and no one has been sacked.” Because it is a peaceful rally, no one bothered them.
“Why is Ebonyi’s case usually unique?” David Umahi, the Governor, must address this. As he (Umahi) previously stated, Ebonyi votes belong to the APC; yet, he is a person, and he should enable us to support a candidate of our choosing.
“No one loves what is going on in Nigeria. And we believe Peter Obi is the light that will illuminate Nigeria. He is the beacon of hope for Nigerian youth. He is the light that will put an end to all of Nigeria’s qualities.”
Another Obi fan stated that many of his coworkers were harmed.
However, all attempts to obtain a response from the Ebonyi State Police Command were futile at the time of publishing this report, as the spokesman, Chris Anyanwu, did not answer his calls.
