The Edo State government was listed as one of the 12 states in the nation that are due workers’ salaries, according to the Federal Government’s request to civic-tech organization BudgIT on Friday.
In a study made public on Friday, BudgIT asserted that numerous states in Nigeria had broken their contractual obligations to their employees by failing to pay at least one month’s salary.
The organization said that Abia, Ebonyi, Edo, and Taraba are due their workers six months’ salary in its 2022 Nigerian Sub-National Salary Survey study.
Iserhienrhien Efe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, denied the assertion in a letter sent to BudgIT on Friday.
He said that since Governor Godwin Obaseki took office in 2016, the Edo State administration has been paying employees’ salaries on time.
The letter stated: “Salaries and allowances of state employees have been continuously paid on or before the 25th day of every month since he (Governor Obaseki) assumed office on the 12th of November 2016 until the present.
“Therefore, it can be inferred from your publishing that you had the least chance to perform a thorough search prior to your aforementioned posting.
“Even in your meager efforts, you showed no consideration for the sensitivities of states that are pro-people and are making every effort to enhance the welfare of employees.
Because of this, “we demand a retraction within 48 hours of receipt of this letter, the aforementioned publication specifically as it affects Edo State and a public apology published in the same Cable Index online series in addition to one other national newspaper.”
