Police in Kwara state have arrested Hassan Ibrahim for allegedly murdering his 90-year-old father, Sabi Ibrahim, in order to steal his ATM card.
SP Ajayi Okasanmi, the state police spokesperson, revealed on Thursday in Ilorin that one Aishat Ibrahim reported to police on Aug. 5 that the elder Ibrahim was gone.
He went on to say that the abrupt disappearance of the 90-year-old veteran army corporal aroused red flags.
“Investigation into the incident resulted in the arrest of Hassan, the missing elderly man’s biological son.”
“During the inquiry, the suspect admitted to giving his father a painkiller injection combined with other chemicals, which caused him to become weak and disoriented.”
“He did this after returning from the bank, where he had gone with his father to renew his ATM card.
“He took the father on a rented motorbike to an isolated unfinished structure and strangled him to death once the father had received the new ATM card.”
“He then dug a small hole and buried his father after robbing him of the ATM card,” Okasanmi said.
According to the police spokesman, Hassan then fled to Kaduna State and began taking money from his late father’s account. He had already withdrawn N59,000 before being apprehended.
Okasanmi further alleged that Hassan sold the borrowed motorbike before fleeing to Kaduna, where he was apprehended.
“‘Both the ATM card and the stolen motorbike were found,” he said.
According to the police spokeswoman, Hassan will be charged following a thorough investigation.
