According to authorities, fifty people have killed and several others have been homeless as floods wreak havoc in Jigawa State.
The flood devastated thousands of homes in the state, according to Sani Yusuf, executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who spoke to journalists in Dutse.
He claimed that the predicament compelled citizens of Jigawa to seek refuge in other locations, including governmental structures.
Journalists learned that 11 temporary camps were used by the state administration to house numerous displaced people.
Balangu hamlet, where no less than 237 homes were destroyed and four people died, has produced some of the victims.
We have 11 temporary camps full of displaced people. “237 houses have been damaged in Balangu alone, and people are now residing in a makeshift camp,” Yusuf said.
After the six fatalities in Kafin Hausa, four more persons passed away in that same community. So far, the flood has claimed the lives of around 50 individuals throughout the state. Seven members of the same family passed away even yesterday.
Sadiya Umar, the minister of humanitarian affairs, visited the North-Western state to disperse aid as part of the Federal Government’s intervention efforts.
She traveled to the region to help the victims along with Mustapha Habib, director general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The Minister claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari’s direction to give the flood victims the assistance they need was the reason for her visit to the state.
“This tragedy is especially tragic because it has a recurring nature. Schools, homes, and peoples’ means of subsistence are all suffering significant harm as a result of this, Umar claimed.
President Muhammadu Buhari issued a directive to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to activate the National Emergency Management Agency in order to respond and provide the required support to the affected people after learning of this tragic news.
The Jigawa State Governor, Badaru Abubakar, praised the Federal Government in his remarks for what he called a prompt response to the situation.
He bemoaned the flooded scenario, adding the victims had suffered great trauma. The governor believes that the government’s action will mitigate its impact on the populace.
“The most recent occurrence took place four to five days ago, and now there are supplies for relief. We have witnessed the level of assistance we received throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and all illnesses. You constantly help our people in a timely and appropriate manner. We are so grateful, the governor remarked.
