The Jigawa state government has ordered the immediate closure of all public schools in the state’s 27 LGAs due to the threat of a terrorist attack.
However, the schools were abruptly closed on Wednesday, when students were taking their third-term exams.
The unexpected closure of the schools has caused concern and anxiety among state residents.
Many students in boarding schools were stranded as they waited to be evacuated by buses normally dispatched by LGAs.
Confirming the development, the state Commissioner of Education, Lawan Inusa Danzomo, stated that the state has received such a threat aimed at schools.
He stated that the students were planning to return home for their third term holiday, and that with the threat, closing the schools is acceptable.
Recently, the state witnessed the activities of criminals suspected of being terrorists who carried out attacks in various parts of the state.
An attack on an immigration post in Magari LGA occurred last week. One officer was killed, and two others were injured.
Earlier On Tuesday 10 August, gunmen killed one immigration officer and injured two others in Jigawa State’s Magari Local Government Area.
The Maigatari council area is located on the Nigeria-Niger Republic border.
The incident occurred near the town’s Galadi-Birniwa axis, about 70 kilometers from the local government’s headquarters.
Isma’il Abba, commandant of the Nigeria Immigration Service’s Jigawa State Command, told reporters that his men engaged the gunmen in a firefight, forcing them to flee.
“The criminals fled into the Niger Republic forest, abandoning their two motorcycles and a phone.”
The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to the official.
“The bandits arrived at the patrol base on two motorcycles, one carrying three people and the other carrying two people; upon arrival, they opened fire on the Immigration staff on patrol, killing one of them, Abdullahi Mohammed.”
“As a result of the heavy exchange of fire, the bandits fled into the bush, abandoning their motorcycles and handset (Techno T5),” he said.
“The two motorcycles are Bajaj with chassis number MD2A18AXS7MWK81092 and Royal with chassis number RY157FMINILI2607, which are now in our possession.”
The two injured officials are being treated at a hospital, while Abdullahi Mohammed, who died in the clash, was laid to rest in Dutse town on Wednesday August 13 2020.
