The Benue State Government has set a goal of recruiting 10,000 people for the State Community Volunteer Guards.
Governor Samuel Ortom made the announcement on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022, during the funeral of his foster father, Elder Joseph Vanger Iyorhon, which was held at St. Athanasius Parish, Gbajimba, the seat of Guma Local Government Area.
The Governor promised the people that his government would continue to safeguard lives and property.
He said that the recruiting of 10,000 Community Volunteer Guards is meant to supplement the work of traditional security organizations in maintaining state security.
Governor Ortom stated that 500 personnel have already been recruited and outfitted, while 1000 are in training and would be formally inaugurated in the coming weeks during their passing out parade in Makurdi.
He then urged the state’s young to be prepared to join the security outfit so that they could work along with conventional security services to battle the terrorists who had infiltrated the state.
He stated that the moment has come for everyone to contribute to the state’s security since, as he puts it, the security services are overburdened.
The Governor, who attended the burial with his wife, Dr. Eunice Ortom, characterized the deceased as a community leader who believed in God.
According to the Governor, his political career began when the late Elder Iyorhon recognized and urged him to run for the position of Chairman of Guma Local Government Council.
The Governor noted that the deceased’s unwavering support throughout the years had substantially contributed to his political success.
He thus advised the people to imitate the Christian life that elder Iyorhon led, emphasizing that God had used the deceased to speak to the people because of his devotion to God’s service even in old age.
In separate funeral orations, Senator Orker Jev of Benue North-West Senatorial District and House of Representatives Member Benjamin Mzondu of Makurdi-Guma Federal Constituency said the deceased’s insightful guidance will be missed by everybody, characterizing him as someone whose doors were always open to all.
Rt. Hon. Titus Uba, Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Governorship candidate, addressed via the Deputy Speaker, Christopher Adaji, and said Elder Iyorhon will be remembered fondly for his responsibilities in the state’s political system.
In his remarks, Ter Guma, His Royal Highness, Chief Dennis Ishemberga, thanked Governor Ortom for taking adequate care of the dead and asked him to extend the gesture to the family he has left behind.
Others who delivered funeral orations were Dr. Mike Ubah, Chairman of the Guma Local Government Council, Barr. William Ortyom, Assembly member for the Guma Constituency, and members of the G-14 led by the Secretary, Mr. Sylvester Atachin.
