The Federal Government has provided food and non-food items to approximately 2400 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Zamfara State in an effort to ameliorate the sufferings of victims of armed banditry.
The displaced people, largely women and children, are currently finding safety at the Tsunami Community on the outskirts of Gusau.
They have been evicted from their homes by suspected terrorists, and some of their family members have been injured, killed, or abducted, while the whereabouts of others are unknown.
The Federal Government handed assistance materials to displaced people on Tuesday through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMI).
The exercise was launched by Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, who stated that the gesture was from President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mrs Farouk stated that additional products would be introduced as the Buhari administration is committed to the well-being of the country’s internally displaced people.
“I beg the recipients of this gesture to make the greatest use of these products.” It is intended to alleviate the suffering of the displaced people. “These products are not for sale; they are offered to you as relief material,” she explained to those present.
Bags of rice and other grains, cooking oil, and cartons of pasta and noodles are among the food items that will be distributed to 400 households. Toiletries, mattresses, blankets, mats, mosquito nets, brocades, and a variety of other products are among the non-food items.
The minister also authorized the construction of a completely restored and equipped library for IDPs and host communities. According to her, the Library was restored and outfitted as part of the “Project Educate All” program.
Mrs Farouk stated that the library would promote the morale and academic activities of internally displaced children as well as those of host communities.
