The leadership of the Adamawa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has denounced the abuse that ex-husband Ibrahim Aliyu inflicted on one of its female members, Nafeesah Vandi.
Vandi claimed that the victim worked for the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Yola in a statement that was jointly signed by the council chairman, Donald Dedan, and his secretary, Fidelis Jocthtan.
The union condemned the heinous act of her alleged husband Mallam Ibrahim Aliyu, a fired employee of PHCN, beating a professional female practicing journalist to a stupor, calling it unacceptable, wicked, and barbaric.
“Even though the police have already taken action to investigate and detain the perpetrator of domestic violence, the NUJ calls for even quicker action to detain the aforementioned Mallam Ibrahim Aliyu and bring him to justice in accordance with the law and constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The union also requests that national and international agencies like FIDA, UNFPA, UNICEF, as well as civil society organizations that advocate for an end to violence against women, intervene in the case so that justice can be served.
In a similar vein, the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) expressed regret that some people have chosen to defy the law at a time when the campaign against domestic violence, wife battering, and other gender-based violence has become a daily affair on pages of newspapers and the airwaves. The statement was jointly signed by NAWOJ’s acting chairperson, Villian Murray, and secretary, Rose Anthony Elishama.
According to the statement, “While nothing with deep concern the barbaric act meted on its member Nafeesa Vandi, says it has to be a strong advocate against violence, against women, and cannot watch its members be a victim,”
Therefore, NAWOJ urged the Nigerian police to look into the case until Nafeesa Vandi receives justice.
The union also made an appeal to the public to keep calling attention to problematic members of society like Ibrahim Aliyu who have transgressed the law.
