Yakubu Maikyau, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been sworn in as the Nigerian Bar Association’s president (NBA).
On July 17, Maikyau was elected president with a total of 22,342 votes, defeating Joe Gazama with 10,842 votes and Jonathan Taidi with 1,373 votes.
Maikyau was sworn in at the NBA’s 62nd annual general meeting on Friday at the Eko Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos.
He succeeded Olumide Akpata as the 31st president of the organisation. His term would end in 2024.
Maikyau stated in his inaugural speech that his primary call is “service to the cause of justice.”
“The discharge of this duty will naturally lead to the socio-economic and political change we desire in Nigeria; engender the recovery, reformation, and repositioning we require as a nation; improve polity productivity, prosperity, and empowerment; and ensure the well-being of the entire citizenry, lawyers included,” he said.
Maikyau was born in Kebbi state on February 6, 1965.
In 1989, he earned a bachelor of law (LLB) degree from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna state, and then attended the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island, Lagos.
On December 12, 1990, Maikyau was admitted to the Nigerian bar.
After completing the required National Youth Service Corps program in 1991, the senior advocate proceeded into private legal practice and joined the Sokoto law office of Messrs. Danladi Bamaiyi and Company, where he worked around 12 years and progressed to become the head of chambers.
He established his legal business, Y. C. Maikyau & Co., in 2003, with offices in the FCT, Sokoto, and Kebbi states.
Between 2013 and 2014, he studied at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London, where he earned a certificate in International Commercial Arbitration before becoming a member of the Institute (FCIArb) in September 2014.
He was elected a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators in November 2021. (FICMC).
