The Niger State Government has provided relief goods worth N40 million to recent flood victims in Kontagora town of Kontagora Local Government Area to alleviate their suffering.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who ordered the distribution of the materials, also ordered the victims to leave their current residences and migrate to safer grounds.
Bello, who was represented during the distribution of supplies to victims by the Commissioner for Local Government,
Alhaji Kabir Abbas Musa, Minister of Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that if the affected people do not migrate out of the flood zone, they may face similar problems before the rainy season ends.
Bello stated that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NIMET) projections on the rainfall pattern this year should not be ignored in order to avoid avoidable calamity.
The distribution took place in the Emir of Kontagora’s palace, with the Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Sani Mamman Lafya, and the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Ahmed Inga, in attendance.
The Emir of Kontagora, Alhaji Muazu Barau, who was represented by the Madakin Kontagora, Alhaji Aminu Ahmed, expressed thanks to the government for the gesture, noting that the distribution of relief supplies demonstrated that the government recognizes the victims’ plight.
300 50 kg sacks of rice, 200 bags of maize, 150 25-liter jerry cans of palm oil, and 150 jerry cans of vegetable oil were provided.
There were also 600 textiles, 300 blankets, 300 mats, 50 bags of salt, and 50 cartons of Maggi.
In the flood that accompanied four days of torrential rain in the town on September, two individuals were killed, 150 houses were demolished, and scores more others were relocated.
The majority of the victims are currently squatting with their relatives in various sections of town.
