Beginning in October, the federal government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will work together to digitize birth registration in the country.
Emelia Allan, a UNICEF Kano child protection manager, revealed this in Kano at a two-day capacity development workshop for journalists from Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa.
Abubakar Rimi Television, which is controlled by Kano State, organized the session (ARTV).
“Arrangements on the proposed exercise have progressed, with Kano State serving as the pilot state,” Ms Allan said, adding that the exercise’s success in Kano will decide its expansion.
“We are doing our utmost to defend children’s rights, with the government agreeing on five critical areas, including law and policies that are in accordance with international norms.”
“Increasing birth registration is also one of the major topics.” The good news is that Kano is testing the digital birth registration system with which we are assisting the government.
“We aim to digitize birth registration; manual registration is one of the practices that contribute to poor birth registration.”
“The government wants to digitize the system, and Kano is piloting it in all 44 local government areas in the state,” she explained.
Ms Allan stated that unlike the manual approach, digital registration of youngsters would go directly to the system and a digital certificate will be issued.
Earlier, Rahama Farah, the Kano UNICEF head, stated that the capacity development session will help media report on children and women’s concerns.
Mr Farah, who was represented by a UNICEF Communication Specialist named Samuel Kaalu, directed media to pay closer attention to issues impacting vulnerable children and women.
He stated that starvation and underage marriage are still widespread, and that many school-age children, particularly females, do not have access to education.
“As 2023 approaches and politicians and candidates compete for various posts, the media should press them to commit to addressing some of these challenges if elected.”
“The world should be aware of the plight of children in Nigeria, to the point that if you marry off an underage girl, she may never have the opportunity to attend school,” he stated.
