According to Abiru Attahiru, permanent secretary in the Zamfara Ministry of Education, at least 75 secondary schools remain closed due to bandit threats.
Mr. Attahiru made the announcement while reading a message of goodwill at a two-day conference to domesticate the National Policy on Gender in Education (NPGE). The conference was organized by the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in collaboration with UNICEF.
Mr. Attahiru stated that the majority of the institutions are girls’ secondary schools that have been shuttered since September 2021 as a result of assaults on two girls’ schools in the state.
He stated that the administration was working around the clock to reopen the schools that had been closed since September 2021 because to bandit threats.
The permanent secretary went on to say that the government ordered the schools closed following the kidnapping of 75 students from Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Zamfara’s Maradun local government area.
Mr. Attahiru emphasized the importance of including field officers in the creation of national education policies on gender education in order to achieve the desired results.
Ahmed Hashim, the state’s UNICEF consultant, underlined the committee’s objectives, including analyzing feedback from past sessions on NPGE, in his remarks.
