The Federal Government has announced that the judgement of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) ordering members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to work did not result in a winner or a loser.
Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, made the announcement on Wednesday while meeting with members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) in his Abuja office.
Ngige also stated that the court decision does not prevent additional talks between the FG and ASUU.

“The verdict is in the best interests of the nation,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokeswoman, Olajide Oshundun. “It is a win-win scenario for all of us – the government, the students, the academics, and all Nigerians.”
“I just received a court order directing ASUU to return to work.” It is a sound decision. There is no winner and no defeated. You academic doctors are now members of ASUU, yet you are still present, despite the fact that you have disassociated yourselves and are working. We want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to your kids.
“The court’s decision does not stop us from continuing to negotiate and discuss.” The pro-chancellors met with Mr. President and made several requests, including topping up government offerings and investigating the possibility of a bailout. Mr. President stated that he will talk with stakeholders while thinking about it. So he’ll consult with everyone.”
Ngige applauded the House of Representatives’ role in the matter, adding he was pleased that Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila stated that members will meet with the President.
He said the intervention was opportune since the President must have contacted some stakeholders, and that whatever money put in will go into the 2023 appropriation, which is where the National Assembly comes in.
“It’s excellent that they’ve showed interest now. When they provide that proposition, the Executive will have no objections. ASUU should be aware that this is a positive step forward.
“And all of this was promised to them by the Minister of Education at their most recent meeting with him.” “They should do the necessary and return to the classroom,” the minister remarked.
He stated that the government will direct the vice-chancellors to reopen the institutions in accordance with the court’s judgment.
