A young Palestinian guy was slain by Israeli forces during a raid on the Tubas governorate in the northern part of the occupied West Bank.
Younis Ghassan Tayeh was shot in the chest on Wednesday in the al-Faraa refugee camp, a few kilometers south of Tubas city, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, who recognized him as such.
Al Jazeera was informed by the boy’s relatives that he was 20 years old.
At 6:00am (03:00GMT), Israeli forces attacked the refugee camp in the newest of what have grown to be daily incursions by the army throughout the occupied West Bank.
Mohammed Hassan Tayeh, Tayeh’s uncle, claimed that the shooting was unprovoked and that Tayeh’s nephew was shot by a sniper while he was “in an open place, exposed to the soldiers.”
Mohammed told Al Jazeera that he was just 100 meters (328 feet) away when his nephew was shot: “Younis was at home. He heard that they invaded his uncle’s house, so he walked down with a bunch of young people to witness.”
Local political groups called for a day-long walkout on Wednesday in response to the murder.
According to detainees’ advocacy organizations, the Israeli army detained at least 21 Palestinians overnight on Wednesday, including those from Nablus, Ramallah, Hebron, and Jerusalem.
Salah Tawfiq Sawafta, a 58-year-old Palestinian, was assassinated on August 19 during a raid on Tubas by Israeli soldiers as he was returning home from early morning prayers at the mosque next to his home.
The blockaded Gaza Strip, where almost five million Palestinians reside, has been under military control by Israel for 55 years, making it the longest occupation in contemporary history.
Palestinians living under Israeli occupation have a variety of problems, including land theft, forced relocation, severe movement restrictions, denial of residency rights, arbitrary detention, and daily killings.
A comprehensive arms embargo against Israel as well as targeted sanctions against specific officials, such as asset freezes and travel bans, have been called for in recent reports by local and international human rights organizations accusing Israel of practicing apartheid and persecuting the Palestinian people as a whole.
Since the beginning of the year, Israeli troops have conducted over 2,200 raids and arrest operations throughout the occupied West Bank, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Aviv Kochavi, the chief of general staff of the Israeli army, claimed on Monday that “hundreds of assaults” had been averted as justification for the raids and arrests.
More than 140 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops in the 1967-occupied areas so far in 2022, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, including 49 during Israel’s most recent three-day attack on the Gaza Strip.
OCHA reports that during the same time, the Israeli army has wounded more than 6,960 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Additionally, in 2022, Palestinian attacks in Israel and the occupied West Bank claimed the lives of 19 persons.
