President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged by the non-governmental organization Center Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) to drop plans to combine the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The intended merger of the two security services, according to CAIDOV, would constitute a crime against the law and, if carried out, would do more harm than good.
The NGO’s executive director, Gbenga Soloki, noted during a press conference on Tuesday in Lagos that efforts to repeal the NSCDC Enactment Bill are harmful to Nigerians’ welfare and that such a plan is cruel and harmful.
The Federal Government should enhance its staff size, manpower, and budget, argued Soloki, rather than considering the suggested merger or abolition of the NSCDC so that the organization could continue to provide the finest service to the country.
“Merging Civil Defense and Police is a bad marriage that won’t benefit the nation.
Those advocating for the Civil Defense Corp’s elimination or merger ought to reconsider their positions.
