RAMPANT BOREHOLE PUMP THEFTS HIT GONIN GORA COMMUNITY IN KADUNA
Gabriel Udeh, Kaduna
A growing concern is rocking the Gonin Gora community in Kaduna, as a syndicate of thieves has been stealing borehole pumps from residents’ compounds. The thefts, which have become increasingly rampant, have left many without access to clean water.
According to Mr. Sola Fashimi, a resident of the community, over 40 borehole pumps have been stolen from various compounds, particularly in the Ungwan Bije area. Fashimi himself has fallen victim to the thefts, with three pumps stolen from his compound alone.
The thieves, believed to be area boys, operate under the cover of darkness, using diggers to uproot and remove the pumps. Fashimi reported that the last pump stolen from his compound was pulled off with the wires, causing over N150,000 in damages.
Speaking on a local radio forum, Fashimi warned the thieves to desist from their actions, stating that residents would take matters into their own hands if the authorities failed to provide adequate security. He urged the police and civil defense corps to increase patrols in the area, particularly at night.
The rampant thefts have raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in the Gonin Gora community. Authorities are urged to take immediate action to address the issue and bring the perpetrators to justice.
